What age should a child start robotics?
Children can start robotics from around age 5 with screen-free floor robots and simple build kits, move on to motorised builds like LEGO WeDo from about 6 or 7, and handle sensors and more serious programmable kits from around 9 or 10. As with coding, readiness matters more than the birthday.
Earlier than most parents expect
Robotics sounds like a secondary-school subject, but it starts at about age 5. The first robots are screen-free: coding caterpillars and mouse-bots with arrow buttons on their backs. Press the sequence, watch the robot follow it. That is real programming, giving instructions and predicting what will happen, with no reading or typing required.
The readiness signs are ordinary ones: your child enjoys construction toys, can follow a two-step instruction, and likes making something happen and then making it happen again. If that sounds familiar, they are ready for a floor robot, whatever the birthday cards say.
What robotics looks like at each stage
Around 5 to 7 it is floor robots, Snap Circuits and simple builds. The wins are quick, the parts are chunky, and the ideas underneath are sequencing and cause and effect.
Around 7 to 9, motors arrive. Kits like LEGO WeDo let children build a model and bring it to life from a tablet, which is usually the moment robotics stops being toys and becomes my machine did what I told it.
From about 9 or 10, children are ready for sensors and logic: builds that react to the world, engineering systems like K'Nex, Engino and Gravitrax, and code that has to handle what happens if. This is where robotics and typed coding start to meet.
Robotics and coding are the same journey
A robot is the best answer to the question every child eventually asks about code: why does this matter? A loop is abstract on a screen and obvious when it makes a robot drive in a square. If you are weighing robotics against coding for your child, the honest answer is that each one feeds the other, and readiness matters more than which subject comes first.
Starting without buying a robot
Good robotics kits are expensive, and children outgrow stages faster than kit. A club solves both problems: everything is provided, a specialist keeps it fun, and your child gets to try many different kits before you ever need to buy one. If you do buy for home later, buy for the stage they are at now, not the age range on the box.

- No. Screen-free floor robots are designed for exactly that age, and short, playful sessions are how the thinking skills start.
- Should my child learn coding before robotics?
- There is no required order. Early robotics is coding, just with buttons and wheels instead of a keyboard, and each one makes the other make more sense.
- Do we need a robotics kit at home?
- No. At a club all kit is provided, and trying several kinds first is the best way to find out what your child would actually use at home.
