What age should a child start coding?

Short answer

Children can start coding from around age 5 using visual, block-based tools, then move to typed code around 9 to 11. There's no single right age. What matters is matching the tools to your child's stage so it stays playful, hands-on and fun.

The honest answer on age

Most children are ready to start coding from around age 5, well before they can type. At this age, coding is about giving instructions, spotting patterns and seeing cause and effect, all through colourful blocks and physical robots rather than text.

By 9 to 11, many children are ready to move from blocks to real typed languages like Python. The key is not rushing it. A child who enjoys it at 5 will go far further than one pushed too hard, too soon.

What coding looks like by age

At 5 to 7 it's floor robots and simple block sequences. At 7 to 9 it's Scratch games and controlling robots through missions. At 10 to 13 it moves into sensors, logic and a first real text language.

How to get your child started

You don't need a computer at home or any experience yourself. A weekly club gives structure, the right kit and a specialist to keep it fun, which is often what turns a passing interest into a real one.
